  5. I don't know why fans havent' enjoy these books??Might be they were not properly introduced??
Anyway, there are only 4 such Aranyadev books, each with 2 titles, by DSK from 2003-4 period and these are pretty rare!
All 8 stories were based on Egmont's creations(of Sweden) and 3-4 stories are just as good as any Falk's story incld. Devil's Origin(from #1)..

    2. I guess the drawing and coloring of the characters, and also the storyline were much well captured in IJC comics, compared to Egmont or Frew. Specially in DSK's Egmont version I did not like the extra background around the story-pages, though I bought some of these comics from DSK, but I did not enjoy much even in my earlier age.

In IJC's story, the Phantom was not only an aggressive, super-hero but also romantic, humanitarian, loves animals, kids - more sensitive to other social issues in good ways.

    3. Thank you Kuntalda for knocking on the correct points. Actually Egmont stories;which published Scandinavian Phantomen/Phntomet stories, are of a different genre. Agreed,Lee Falk's Phantom was more simple, easy on minds, not updated about global/political scenerio or properly modernised, but the unmistakable old-world charm had the capacity to captivate the heart wholly. Moreover the wit, wisdom and charm of The Phantom as portrayed in Falk's stories are incomparable. And as we are trying to get back to the memories of our childhood,IJC Phantoms are the most convenient way to achieve that. Somehow the Indian readers are not being able to get acquainted with the Scandinavian Phantom, the proof being Egmont's very short run in India compared to IJCs 27-year publication history. I felt the scandinavian creators could not avoid the impact of those countries' socio-economic conditions in their stories;on the contrary,Lee Falk's creation had an understandable connectivity with India, which made the series so popular,as it was easier for us to identify ourselves to those stories. An avid reader of Phantom from India;I think could not avoid the fact that the mature stories of Fantomen/Moonstone(USA) can be appealing to mind, but heart is always with Lee Falk, specifically IJCs. IJC All the Way.

    4. @Kaushik: yes, when it's the matter of heart then Indrajal will give 10 goals to all other publishers etc as these are not mere comics, but a way to relieve the childohood and nostalgia!
But then there is a thing call mind,as u rightly putted, and in that case Ijc didn't cover many a BEST Falk's creations, mostly due to editorial fault/conservativeness etc!At least 20+ Phantom classic and 50+ Mandrake classic were skipped in Ijc.Some of course due to cost saving(of buying oldest strips) and few were political. All Indian Phantom fans missed 2 Falk-Barry classic : "Hunta Witch" & "Mysterious Island of Dogs" - 2 stunning thrillers,'cos these had some connection with US-Russia!! But later DC rescued by reprinting these two titles in their digests! But there are several other which neither DC nor Ijc published and we had to print-out those strips for our collection!
A couple of examples of mandrake are - "Mr.Heavy"(remember Indrada? :)) and "3D Monster"(intro of Karma)!! I donno why ToI skipped these two as there were neither political connection nor nudity etc...quite strange skips!

    5. Ar Egmont er baypare boli, ogulor sather Falk-Phantom er kono compare hoyna...those r simply Scandanavian creations for their local readers, not whole world! But the reason of failure was not only the stories(some were really good) but the costing!! Back then on 2000-2003 Ijc could be find out @3-5 from old sellers(I remember people refusing to pay 8-10/- for Ijcs from below #200/below #100 ...ha ha...just imagine!!) and Egmont's price was 70/- for Ben and 90/- for Eng!!How come those will be sold??
But NOW market has changed, fans giving 200-300/- for one single Ijc(needn't be very rare),so if they tried those issues now,all will buy irrespective of the stories etc!

    6. @ Hojo: Thank you for your thoughtful inputs, yes price had been a factor, but as we can understand the mindset has changed a lot,the scandinavian stories can have a market now, some publisher can also try reprinting Falk/Scandinavian stories alternatively as Frew(Aus) does to gain popularity in India. Regarding Falk creations, yes some mysterious stance was taken by TOI,it's beyond my understanding why most Ray Moore classics were never printed,I think "Lucy Carey" was also never published, but Diamond retrieved them, yes there had been some political corrections which was done by TOI,keeping in mind the-then situation;I can remember the differences I noticed in the mandrake strip's original and IJC version(Swarner Avishap,I thing IJC No.318),but there had been harmless stories which never got published by IJC. That remains a mystry. And nudity had never been an issue with TOI,they used to put heavy colours in order to properly dress up the beautiful ladies!!!!!!

      Delete
    7. @Kaushik: Yes,that also my thought! Why no publisher coming forward is beyond my understanding as the market is booming(in case of vintage comics' reading - just look how ND/MC Samagra getting praises!)...All Falk strips of Mandrake & Betal shud once agiain re-tried in Indian market...

By the way,Lucy Carrey was published in Ijc too,and coincidentally Mahasthobir has posted that yesterday(Iic #49).And starngely ToI didn't covered Lucy...although the story was heavily edited to fit in that 28-page format! To read the full UNEDITED story you have to read DC-P #12..

And yes, that MTM story was edited to convert that Sheikh in an European count....just think the extra effort they had to put?? But worst edit was Lothar's costume re-drawn in '80s....u can check a old blog-post where this was discussed :

    9. @Hojo:Have been to the posts.it's revealing and Phantom research has gone to a new level!!! Thank you.
Now on a serious note: I was also a taker of Sameer's Phantom Sundays/Dailies,and just requsting;can you help him with the Mandrake strips? He is ready to print those, and I am an ardent believer of hard-copies,so it will be another project to be treasured.
One more thing: printing IJCs is also something I support,as those old copies are facing the wrath of time,I have been continuing a talk with Sameer regarding the same, and the rough estimate per page would be Rs.8,but what I saw in Mr.Mahasthobir's blog,he mentioned that every 4 page is having a cost of Rs.26,that comes to Rs.6.50 per page, and it seemed that the papers were glossy and colours were enhanced,so if Sameer is introduced to this idea,I feel the cost will come down to some extent if there would be more takers, and I believe there are people who will support this idea. Please have a thought.

    10. I done the MTM set incld. the major ones - almost 60% covered - by myself as I haven't seen much takers, and sam gone out of order, back on end of '09!
And coming to more important topic, those who have done Ijc re-print,acc. to them, the charm is missing as you undersatnd properly!!That's the reason why, even after ijc-print-project in under talk since 2008 or so,hardly anybody did 'cos all want the REAL Hard copies to hold,PLUS,the costing of printing would be 2-5 times of the CURRENT RATE of most original Ijcs(except the first 50 issues or so..).So most want to invest the money for real thing ....(it's better to experiment like Mahashobir did ,say with 10-20 copies, but for a bigger scale,it's not appropriate!)

      Delete
    11. and abt costing,MS paid 6.5/page 'cos he was alone,if 10 tried same might be rate lowered to 4.0/page but still the price would be 120+/copy....and u can have most of Indrajal original issues @30-50/copy!! So I doubt how many will come forward for such lot??

    12. yeah got the point.but at least help me with the MTM strips...
